1. Introduction to a DIY Screen Porch Installation

Screen porches provide protection from pests and other elements without sacrificing your ability to enjoy a relaxing time outdoors. Whether you are looking to convert an existing space or start from scratch, installation of a screen porch is a straightforward process.

  • Identify Your Space – Many options exist in terms of the size and shape of your screened porch. Determine the dimensions and any special features you want to include. Prior to construction, research local codes and regulations that might exist for building additions to an existing structure.
  • Prepare the Site – Start by clearing and leveling the area. Loose soil should be removed and replaced with well-packed gravel. To prevent rotting, apply a waterproof membrane to the porch bed.
  • Install a Foundation – The foundation for your screen porch is the key to making sure it stands the test of time. Pour concrete footings around the perimeter and install support posts. For added sturdiness, build a pier footing by pouring concrete into form tubes.

In the Walls – Install vertical beams around the perimeter, followed by horizontal beams. Make sure the posts are properly secured to the beams. Cover the walls with wire mesh and attach the screening material to framing. Use a level and string line to ensure that it is secure.

Putting On a Roof – The roof of a screened porch is generally a lightweight structure. Install it directly to the posts, using brackets and reinforcing beams. Secure the metal or plastic roof panels with screws or self-tapping metal fasteners. Add flashing around all the edges to seal out the elements.

Table 1. Install the Screening

Steps Time Needed
Identify your space 1 hour
Prepare the site 2 hours
Install a foundation 4-8 hours
Install walls and framing 4-8 hours
Install the Roof 2-4 hours
Install Screening 2-4 hours

By following these procedures, you will have your DIY screen porch installed in no time. Be sure to use quality materials throughout the process – this will pay off in the long run. And don’t forget to double check that all connections are secure before enjoying your new outdoor home.

2. What You’ll Need to Install a Screen Porch

Installing a screened porch can help you enjoy the great outdoors while still staying safe from pesky insects. But first, you will need some materials before you can get started. Here’s a list of the essential items that you will need.

  • Screening material – This might be either metal or fibreglass screening. Talk to your local hardware store for best advice and purchase it by the roll.
  • Tools – You’ll need a few hand tools for installing your porch. These include a tape measure, level, hammer, utility knife, screws, and a drill.
  • Lumber – This will be used for framing and will come in a few lengths, depending on what size your porch is. Cedar wood is the ideal option, but pine lumber is a cheaper and almost just-as-good alternative.
  • Hardware – This includes lag screws, screws, and washers for your framing and hose clamps to secure your screening material to the frame.

You may need some additional materials depending on your specific build. These can include door hinges, a door knob, and screws to attach the door frame. Edging material might also be needed to cover the edges of the framing, or a caulk material to seal the joints. Also, make sure you check building codes in your area before you begin installation.

Now that you have an idea of what you need, you’re ready to start building your own screened porch. Good luck!

3. Step-by-Step Guide to Installing a Screen Porch

Before you can start using your screen porch, you have to install it correctly. Here is a step-by-step guide for installing a screen porch!

1. Prepare the deck footings by digging a hole large enough to fit a post, about 30 inches deep.

2. Level the footing and place the post into it, securing it with concrete.

3. Cut the 2×6 boards that will be used for the framing and attaching the porch. The size will depend on the size of the porch.

  • Cut the top pieces with 45% degree angles
  • Cut the bottom pieces with 90% degree angles
  • Cut two more 2×4 boards and fasten them horizontally in between the cut posts

4. Measure and cut the screen material to fit the size of the porch.

  • You may want to consider using fiberglass on the bottom, if for some reason the screen won’t fit in the area.
  • Make sure to use the appropriate type of caulk.

5. Attach the cedar trim pieces to the frame to hold the screen material in place. Be sure to use galvanized nails and use countersinks to cover the nail heads.

6. Secure the screen material to the frame, starting at the top and working your way down. Make sure to use some anchors to hold it in place.

7. Once the screen is secured, add the decorative pieces like the shutters or awnings. Attach them with stainless steel screws and caps.

When you have completed the installation, your screen porch is ready for use. Enjoy your outdoor living space!

4. Preparing the Space for Installation

Now that you have the supplies ready to install a screen porch, it’s time to prepare the space. Here’s what you’ll need to do:

  • Check the Perimeter: Inspect the perimeter of the space to make sure the base is level and even. Look for any cracks or uneven areas that need to be fixed up before proceeding.
  • Remove Obstacles: If there are any obstacles in the installation area, like branches, furniture, or shrubbery, move them away from the perimeter.
  • Secure the Base: To ensure proper installation, secure the base with concrete or gravel. This will provide a solid, sturdy foundation for the entire structure.

When you’re done with the prep, you’ll be ready to move to the next phase of installation. Using the included instructions, you can easily assemble the screen porch and start enjoying it right away.

Additional tip: Make sure to leave clear access points outside of the perimeter of the space so you can easily get in and out. This will make your life much easier if you ever need to repair or maintain the screened area.

Concrete Gravel
Comes pre-mixed More affordable
More durable Easier to install
More brittle Not as long lasting

Knowing which material to use for the base of your installation can be tricky, but understanding the benefits of each can help you make the best decision. Concrete is more durable, but it’s also more expensive and more brittle. On the other hand, gravel is more affordable but not as long lasting. Ultimately, the choice is up to you.

5. Installing the Frames and Panels

Once the frame is in place, it is time to attach the screen panels with a stapler, staples, and spline. Before you start, measure the spaces between the frames accurately and cut the screen to the correct size.

Here’s what you’ll need to attach the screen:

  • Screening material
  • Roll of spline
  • Tape measure
  • Stapler
  • Staples

Steps to attach the screen:

  1. Unroll the screening material over the entire framing structure.
  2. Work from one corner of the structure towards the opposite corner so that the screen is evenly distributed. Starting from the middle can mean that some areas are too taut while others are too lose.
  3. When you reach the corner, pull the screen, and staple it along the side of the frame below the corner. Continue in this manner until you reach the opposite corner.
  4. When you are done, cut the screen between 2 stapled ends.
  5. Secure the edges of the screen to the spline on each side with a stapler.
  6. Move along the frame and press the spline firmly into the corner.
  7. Cut off the excess material with an exacto knife.
  8. Complete by repeating the steps for the remaining sides.

Attaching the screen may seem like a lot of work, but taking the time to accurately measure the gaps and secure each corner of the structure correctly will ensure that you have a properly installed screen that stands the test of time.

6. Adding Finishing Touches to Your Screen Porch

Adding the finishing touches to your new screen porch can be a satisfying way to show off your skills and put the finishing touch on your space.

Choose Your Seating

The possibilities for seating in your screen porch are almost endless. You can use vibrant-colored cushions on a built-in bench for a comfortable option. Choose a few chairs and a cozy loveseat, or try a vintage-style picnic table and chairs to give your porch a warm, country feel.

Select Lighting and Accessories

Add a few pieces of outdoor lighting for evening ambience. Hanging strings of lights around the columns or between beams will give your porch a welcoming glow. There’s no limit to the types of accessories you can use such as pillows, rugs, and even outdoor art pieces. Be creative and make your porch a reflection of your style.

Table of Materials and Cost for a Screen Porch

Material Cost
Screen $5.00/square foot
Railings $10.00/linear foot
Flooring $15.00/square foot
Posts $75.00/each
